Capital Power (CPX:TSX) is a growth-oriented North American power producer headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. The company develops, acquires, operates and optimizes power generation from a variety of energy sources.
Capital Power owns more than 3,300 megawatts of power generation capacity at 16 facilities across North America. An additional 487 megawatts of owned wind generation capacity is under construction or in advanced development in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.
Development Engineering is part of CEPM group and each of these two positions would deal with technical activities during pre-construction phase of Greenfield projects and during due-diligence phase of existing operating facilities in case of Acquisition projects. Candidates for these positions would have an opportunity to move into lead role of project construction and operations engineering as projects progress.
Requirements:
10+ years of experience in power industry in Fossil Fuels Generation;
Must have good working understanding of thermodynamics, procedures, and cost involving operations and construction of power generation facilities;
Strong understanding of project economic analysis;
Must have previously been involved in due-diligence activities relating to project Acquisitions and Greenfield development by undertaking following tasks:
-Conceptual design, equipment & cycle technology selection and supporting RFP response,
-System design & optimization, plant performance modeling, material & energy balances by using THERMOFLOW, GATE, or other engineering software,
-Estimated emissions and discharges,
-Development of EPC and O&M costs estimates,
-Supported Project Economic Analysis;
Experience with Acquisition and Greenfield projects over $ 100 million;
Safety first attitude;
Strong team mentality and able to effectively interface with other groups within the organization;
Proficient in Excel;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Familiarity with environmental permit requirements pertaining to power plant operations and construction;
Ability to undertake multiple projects at same time;
Able to communicate technical information to non-technical groups to effectively evaluate projects;
Willingness to travel at least 25% of the time.
Qualifications that would be considered a plus for this position:
Experience with gasification and cogeneration projects,
Design and cost estimation of wind and solar projects,
Experience construction management and plant O&M,
Understanding of NEPOOL, PJM & CALISO power markets and supporting market forecasting,
Supported contracts (PPA, Fuel, EPC, etc.) negotiations,
Advanced engineering degree and/or PE license
Job Duties:
Provide technical support for Development and M&A opportunities with focus on energy balance, economic value drivers (costs), and contract negotiations for operations and construction,
Work within CEPM (Construction, Engineering & Project Management) group on Greenfield projects by establishing conceptual performance, design & layout, and EPC costs,
Work with Operations group by supporting plant assessment studies, verifying operating procedures, costs & budgets on Acquisition projects,
Coordinate and Support other groups within the organization, specifically in tasks relating to project location & screening, technical feasibility analysis, market forecast, and EHS,
Effectively communicate technical information to non-technical groups within the organization,
Prepare appropriate technical scope of work and complete such scope using internal company resources and/or supervising external consultants,
Provide recommendations for equipment selection, new concepts and techniques to improve performance, constructability improvements, cost reductions, project design features, or comply with changes in code or regulations,
Prepare techno-economic section(s) of Board documents for project Acquisition and Greenfield projects,
Assist Director of Development Engineering in developing department budgets, internal corporate business practices, strategic planning and marketing strategies.
Education:
BS in Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
