Principal DRM Engineer (Medtronic)
Job Title: Principal DRM Engineer

The Principle Engineer supporting DRM (Design for Reliability and Manufacturability) is the industry equivalent of a Lean Product Development expert practitioner (or DFSS expert practitioner) and is responsible for advancing the art of product development and product design across all business units at Medtronic. The role will require innovation, influence and leadership through collaboration with several levels of the organization. Our goal is to ensure that our product development teams optimize product features, manufacturing costs, and time to market as we bring life saving technologies to the world with unsurpassed quality and reliability. The position will be based in Northridge, CA and include global travel to our manufacturing facilities.
Primary responsibilities will be to develop organizational competency and to implement product development tools using Design, Reliability & Manufacturability concepts. In addition, the individual will assure the right product design starting with requirements and design input through design freeze and first in man clinical trials. The individual will also support product development leaders and professionals through coaching of when, where and why DRM projects are beneficial. The role will also include process improvement for the functional areas participating in product development.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop DRM competency across MDT by Piloting, Delivering and Refining DRM concepts as part of the DRM deployment team.
- Piloting includes participating on multiple technology & product development teams to pilot the application of DRM methods and tools within Medtronic and advance the science of DRM. Coach teams or lead as example for others to learn from.
- Delivering includes just-in-time (JIT) training & facilitation of DRM methodology & tools on development programs. (May also participate in delivering training courses)
- Refining includes developing common templates, site-specific case studies and improving Diabetes materials/architecture.
- Participate in organizational architecture and infrastructure to support usage of the DRM methodology and tools by program teams.
- Assist DRM Deployment Leader with the creation and implementation of business strategies. Act as a strong advocate for DRM. Champion the sharing and adoption best practices within Diabetes and across Medtronic businesses to accelerate success. Develop future talent in business units
- Assist with appropriate project selection/scoping for development teams. Assess areas for high-level/complex program opportunities and define those into appropriate DRM projects.
- Lead process improvement projects, focusing on the engineering processes that support product development.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 8+ years related experience including 4+ years of Product Development and Commercialization experience and 4+ years of related product development and process improvement.
- Lean BB certification
- Deep expertise in at least one of the following:
o Design for Manufacturability and Assembly
o Mechanical Modeling and statistical forecasting with Monte Carlo
o Market research and Product Planning (qualitative and quantitative methods) (VOC, QFD)
o Experience in DOE/ Taguchi Robust Design/ Tolerance Allocation
o Concept Engineering and Innovation (Technology Roadmaps, TRIZ)
o Reliability Testing for New Products
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
- 1+ years Proven record of successful influence and change management skills
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Outstanding trainer ability, both content and technique
- Proven coach demonstrated by coaching multiple projects to successful completion
- Proven track record of successful influence and change management skills
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate, train, coach
- Advanced technical or marketing degree (M.S. or MBA)
- DFSS Master Black Belt certification from recognized leader
- Project Management or Systems Engineering
- Agile, Lean Product Development or Toyota Product Development experience
- Medtronic Lean Sigma knowledge and application ( BB, or MBB)
- Medical device or healthcare background
- Medtronic business unit experience
- Excellent team facilitation & motivational/interpersonal skills
- Ability to assess potential projects for technical difficulty and business impact and determine scope for each project
- Strong working knowledge of Minitab version 14 or higher
- Demonstrated competency in decision making techniques
- FDA Design Control Experience
